With the conclusion of the gold medal game in Helsinki the groups for the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship in Montreal and Toronto, Canada, are known.

Host Canada will begin the tournament in Toronto where they will face silver medallist Russia, bronze medallist USA, Slovakia and Latvia. The Latvians recently earned promotion to the top division after winning the Division I Group A tournament in Vienna, Austria.

New champion Finland headlines the other preliminary-round group in Montreal, which also includes Sweden, the Czech Republic, Denmark and Switzerland.

As in 2015, Montreal and Toronto are co-hosting the event. However, their roles are reversed. Fans in Toronto will get to see the Team Canada games in the preliminary round as well as two quarter-finals. Montreal gets the other group, two quarter-final games, both semi-final games and the medal games for the tournament, taking place at the two NHL venues from 26 December 2016 to 5 January 2017.
